Former Gates Foundation executive won't open charter schools in New York City and Newark

Tom Vander Ark decision to back away from charter plans irritates others involved
July 15, 2011

From The New York Times: Tom Vander Ark, the Gates Foundation’s former executive director of education, was granted charters in 2010 to open a high school in New York City's Brooklyn borough and two others in Newark, N.J. But after spending more than $1.5 million of investors’ money on consultants and lawyers, Vander Ark has walked away from the project, and the schools will not open as planned this fall.
