Cleveland must shrink construction program

Ohio School Facilities Commission wants building plans to be based on 2015 enrollment projections.

The Cleveland school district needs to downsize its construction plan from 111 to about 80 schools. The Ohio School Facilities Commission, which is providing 68 cents out of every dollar spent on the project, is forcing the change so that the plan is geared to projected enrollment in 2015. For Cleveland, that means building for a projected 41,000 students. Five years ago, when the original plan was drafted, enrollment was 72,500. But students have been lost to charter schools, private schools and the suburbs.
