System sought to upgrade facilities as part of desegregation decree

From The Baton Rouge Advocate: Tangipahoa Parish (La.) School System administrators are in a “holding pattern” after voters rejected four tax proposals that would have paid for the district's court-ordered desegregation plan. About 87 percent of the voters rejected each of the proposals and dealt a possible fatal blow to the $187 million plan to improve and integrate parish schools. U.S. District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle, overseeing the 46-year-old desegregation case, has threatened to impose the tax or busing on the school system if voters did not approve the tax proposals. FEBRUARY 2011....from The Baton Rouge Advocate: The Tangipahoa Parish (La.) School Board has voted to put a $120 million bond proposal on the April 30 ballot. The bonds would pay for for new school construction or facility improvements called for in the system’s court-ordered desegregation plan.
