$120 million bond proposal defeated in Tangipahoa Parish (La.) district

School System administrators are in a “holding pattern” after voters rejected four tax proposals that would have paid for the district's court-ordered desegregation plan. About 87 percent of the voters rejected each of the proposals and dealt a possible fatal blow to the $187 million plan to improve and integrate parish schools. U.S. District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle, overseeing the 46-year-old desegregation case, has threatened to impose the tax or busing on the school system if voters did not approve the tax proposals.
