Lowell (Mass.) district decides to close middle school

Officials say shuttering Rogers Middle will save $3.3 million
June 2, 2009

Despite a last-minute plea by Principal Timothy McGillicuddy, the Lowell School Committee has voted to close the 575-student Rogers Middle School at the end of the school year. The closing will save the district $3.3 million as it struggles to close a projected $9.5 million budget shortfall in the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.
