Investigation begins after audit turned up improprieties

The Judson (Texas) Independent School District is now the target of a federal probe, spurred by an audit critical of its construction practices. Last spring, the district hired a law firm to look into its construction program after problems arose with several projects. FROM JANUARY 2009: An audit of the Judson (Texas) Independent School District has found that a series of poor decisions, including a possible violation of the Texas Constitution, has exposed the school system to potential lawsuits from both vendors and taxpayers. Trustees and administrators in the fast-growing district erred on everything from procurement decisions to land purchases to the disposal of district property, according to the 63-page report commissioned by the district. Officials violated their contract with taxpayers by spending $14 million rebuilding the district's football stadium after voters agreed to a $10 million renovation, the report states.
