Detroit enrollment could fall below 100,000

Drop could trigger more changes in struggling district

Detroit Public Schools officials are bracing for the outcome of its student count on Wednesday, when enrollment is expected to fall below 100,000 students. Dropping below that threshold means the district could lose its first-class status, and that would clear the way for more charter schools could open in the city. The change in status also could affect the make-up of the school board and the way the district issues contracts.
