Plans for public safety academy scrapped

Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Mich., says construction proposal no longer financially viable

Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Mich., has scrapped plans to build a multimillion-dollar public safety academy in Northville Township because of a projected fall in property tax revenue, a likely decline in state funds and ballooning construction costs. Schoolcraft officials had been negotiating with the township to buy 40 acres of a former Detroit House of Corrections site for the academy, which would have had a forensics lab and gun range.
