Adult education funds withheld from Detroit
The Detroit Public Schools will not receive $6.2 million in state and federal funding for adult education students this year until district officials can prove the program is no longer violating federal law, according to a notice from the state Department of Labor and Economic Growth. The state says that the school district, in a city with a graduation rate of 58 percent and high adult illiteracy rate, has allowed $11 million for adult education programs to sit unused in district coffers for several years.
