Declining enrollment prompts board to shutter aging campuses

The Covington (Ky.) district will close an elementary and a middle school. Students from Thomas Edison Elementary will attend one of two other elementary campuses in 2009-10, and students at Two Rivers Middle will be moving to the Holmes High School campus. The district says it will save more than $1 million in operating costs by closing the two 70-year-old buildings. Covington has about 3,800 students, 1,000 fewer than a decade ago, but no buildings have closed in that time. Two elementary schools less than a mile from Thomas Edison are well under their capacities. Two Rivers has nearly 500 students in Grades 6 and 7. Holmes, which houses Grades 8-12, is about 800 students under capacity.
