Student journalists quit newspaper at Lincolnshire, Ill., high school

FromThe Chicago Tribune: Several students have resigned as top editors of the newspaper at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Ill., citing frustrations with administrators over perceived censorship of stories that simmered over the last year and which they said could no longer be tolerated. A district spokesman says administrators are disappointed in the students' decision; despite the resignations, the school will continue to offer a newspaper class and publish a paper. NOVEMBER 2009...from The Chicago Tribune: Less than a week after administrators at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Ill., halted the release of the student newspaper because of stories dealing with drinking, smoking and teen pregnancy, staff members say they were told they had less than two hours to produce a paper without the controversial stories, or receive failing grades. The staff members say they were not allowed to remove their bylines from the paper, which they say was sloppily put together and rushed to printers.
