University of Wisconsin to begin emergency text messaging

School will be able to send alerts to cell phones of students and staff

The University of Wisconsin-Madison will soon be able to send instant text alerts to the cell phones of students, faculty and staff in campus emergencies. The school will send messages in urgent situations, particularly when students are being asked to avoid an area of campus, evacuate a building or stay where they are. It's part of a national effort to bolster campus communications after shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois universities.
