Northeastern quietly closes renowned research center

Northeastern University has closed its Center for Labor Market Studies, the Boston Globe reported. The center started in 1979 under a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, and after the grant expired, it was mostly self-funded through the revenues generated by research conducted for mostly governmental agencies and nonprofits.

University officials told the Globe that the decision was made because there was no endowment to support the center and there was no successor to replace the director, Andrew Sum, who retired last year.
