Two school districts in Colorado are among the recipients of state funding awards that support geothermal heating projects across Colorado.

The Colorado Energy Office has awarded $14.4 million from the Geothermal Energy Grant Program and Geothermal Energy Tax Credit Offering to several entities in the state to help them plan and install geothermal heat pumps and thermal energy networks.

Liberty School District J4 in Yuma County, Colorado, has received two awards totaling $1.365 million.

The district will use the money to install a geothermal energy network for two buildings at Liberty School. Three cost-efficient heat pumps will replace a 60-year-old hydronic heating system and will improve ventilation, and enhance indoor air quality.

Liberty School Superintendent Rhonda Puckett says the awards have made the district's geothermal plans financially viable. She expects the system installation will be completed later this year.

The Karval School District in Karval also received funding--$225,000--from the energy grant program to support its geothermal plans.

The Colorado Energy Office made a total of 16 funding awards. Other recipients: local governments, residential communities, a medical campus, and a wastewater treatment facility.
