Mold prompts Fort Bend (Texas) district to close elementary school in Sugar Land for a year
The Fort Bend (Texas) district is closing Barrington Place Elementary in Sugar Land for 2022-23 because of mold growth in the building.
The non-airborne mold was discovered in the chilled water piping above the ceiling during a routine facilities assessment in late June. The insulation that surrounds the chilled water piping has deteriorated, which enabled moisture to get into the material and create conditions for mold growth, the district said in a news release.
The district said students in prekindergarten and early childhood special education programs will attend Sugar Mill Elementary in Sugar Land. Students in kindergarten through second grade will attend Meadows Elementary in Meadows Place. Students in third through fifth grade will attend Lakeview Elementary in Sugar Land.
The district said the remediation work and renovations will be completed in time for students to return to the Barrington Place campus for the 2023-24 school year.
