The Dallas school board has voted to close as many as five campuses because of poor academic performance.
The Dallas Morning News reports that the board has voted to move Edison Middle Learning Center to an existing high school and to combine two elementary schools, J.W. Ray and John F. Kennedy, at another elementary campus.
Two other schools, Carr and Titche elementaries, could be closed depending on their performance on state assessments.
If all five campuses are closed, nearly 2,500 students would attend different schools next year.
Four of the school in question — Edison, Ray, Carr and Titche — have received “improvement required” grades from the state for four or more consecutive years.
Under state law, if any of the four schools miss state accountability marks this year, the Texas Education Agency is required to either close the campus or take over operation of the entire school district and appoint a board of managers and a new superintendent.
District administrators and board member Miguel Solis say declining enrollment necessitates the consolidation of Ray and Kennedy; students from those schools will attend nearby Cesar Chavez Elementary. Over the last four years, the three elementary schools have collectively lost 700 students.
