The Abilene (Texas) school board has voted to sell an elementary school to Abilene Christian University.

The Abilene Reporter News reports the district will sell Taylor Elementary to the university for about $4.3 million.

The district will no longer need the building after construction of a new Taylor is completed. The project is scheduled for completion in December.

The school district and university have negotiated land deals before. The district acquired the land for the new Taylor last year from Abilene Christian, according to The Optimist, the university's student newspaper.

Superintendent David Young says the existing Taylor Elementary is 62 years old, the district's oldest elementary school. The school lacks necessary electrical infrastructure, has more students than the building can support and has safety concerns because each classroom opens to the outside
