Leicester (Mass.) district considers former college campus as new home for high school
The Leicester (Mass.) district is considering purchasing four buildings on the shuttered campus of Becker College and making them the new home of Leicester High School.
Officials said converting the buildings to a high school campus would give students more of a collegiate feel and would also enable the middle school to move into the existing high school, reports The Telegram & Gazette.
The district says Leicester Middle School is not in good condition.
Becker College, which had campuses in Leicester and Worcester, closed earlier this year amid financial struggles.
The district is looking at Campus Center West, Knight Hall, Marsh Hall and Borger Academic Center as sites for a multi-building high school.
"We would like to use the Borger Academic Center for classrooms," said Leicester Superintendent Marilyn Tencza. "There are about 10 classrooms there with three labs, so about 13 classrooms. We're looking at the Fuller Student Center to be able to house some classrooms, and we may need some rooms at Marsh Hall. This is very preliminary, but those are some of the things that we have looked at."
The campus also has athletic facilities, including a turf field and gymnasium. Officials noted the turf field would be used by multiple grades at multiple schools and even the community.
