Douglas County (Colorado) district looks at closing as many as 3 campuses

Consolidation could reduce 6 elementary schools in the Highlands Ranch community to 3 in 2026.
Dec. 6, 2024

The Douglas County (Colorado) district plans to close up to three of its elementary schools in the near future.

The Denver Gazette reports that the district is considering "pairing" and "consolidating" six elementary schools within Highlands Ranch — a municipality with more than enough schools but not enough students.

The school board expects to decide in April which elementary schools will close. Closures are slated to occur in August 2026.

The district is dealing with some areas of declining enrollment, while other areas experiencing massive growth.

"Because our school district is over 850 square miles, we are simultaneously working to address both growth and decline," district officials said. "Growth and decline discussions have been underway in our community for nearly two years and any decisions will continue to be made with transparency and community input."

Superintendent Erin Kane said the district is now busing students to other areas to round out classroom sizes.
