Roof collapse forces students in Ashtabula, Ohio, to move to temporary sites
Students from Lakeside High, where a roof collapsed last month, are dispersed among 4 sites, including a former primary school and a former Catholic school.
WKYC-TV reports that when classes resumed this week, students have been dispersed among several locations in Ashtabula. Students in grades 10 to 12 were attending the former Huron Primary School. Ninth graders have been assigned to the former Mother of Sorrows Catholic School, which the district bought several years ago.
Art, choir and band classes are being held at Erie Intermediate School, and some high school classes have been moved to the district's junior high.
Heavy snow led to a partial roof collaspe on Dec. 1 at Lakeside. Officials determined the building was structurally unsound, and for the rest of the month, students attended oine classes while the district worked out a relocation plan for the 850 high school students.
After repairs, Ashtabula hopes to reopen parts of the high school in August; a full return to the campus is planned for January 2026.
