A historic Indianapolis school building is being torn down and replaced by a $35 million facility that will house the district’s high-ability elementary school.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the district has begun demolishing Joyce Kilmer School 69 as part of the district’s Rebuilding Stronger Plan and 2023 capital referendum that promised to make changes to more than 20 school buildings.

The Joyce Kilmer building has been closed to students since the end of the 2021-22 school year when its previous operator, Kindezi Academy charter school, decided to return its charter to the mayor’s office of education innovation and end its contract with the Indianapolis district.

The aging building has faced issues for years not only with its facility but also with student academic outcomes.

The district’s existing high-ability elementary school program at the Merle Sidener Academy School 59 will transition to the new building. It is slated to open in 2027-28  and serve up to 650 students.
