The Vallejo City (California) school board has voted to close two of its schools by the end of the academic year.
KRON-TV reports that Mare Island Health & Fitness Academy and Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy, both preK-8 schools, will shut down once the 2024-25 school year is completed.
The board also decided to eliminate 75 staff positions, the Vallejo Sun reports.
The district blames the cutsbacks on budget shortfalls caused by declining enrollment. Student numbers have declined by about 30% from 2014-15 to 2023-24. About 425 students are enrolled this year at Mare Island Academy, and 359 are enrolled Loma Vista Academy.
"With declining enrollment and a shrinking budget, we must take action now to ensure the long-term sustainability of our district and continue providing high-quality education for all students,” said School Board President John Fox.
The school board also voted to relocate Vallejo Charter School to the Mare Island campus.
The school board has approved a $12.8 million reduction in budget for the 2025-26 school year that includes a $7.4 million reduction in staffing costs.
