Jefferson County (Kentucky) district is merging 2 low-enrollment elementary schools

Whitney Young and Engelhard elementary schools will be combined on the Engelhard campus.
March 20, 2025

To address declining enrollment, the Jefferson County (Kentucky) district is combining two of its elementary schools in Louisville.

Whitney Young Elementary will be merged with Engelhard Elementary on the Engelhard campus. The school will be called Whitney Young Elementary School at Engelhard.

The school building vacated by Whitney Young will be taken over next school year by sixth graders and staff from Hudson Middle School. Hudson’s seventh and eighth graders will remain at Hudson’s existing campus.

Hudson's students and staff will be reunited on a single campus when the Jefferson County district completes construction of a new Hudson Middle School.

"Barring unforeseen circumstances, construction on a new school building for Hudson could begin before the end of 2025 and be completed in the 2027-28 school year," the district says.
