The Southfield (Mich.) School Board will merge its two high schools and close and reconfigure other campuses in an effort to boost academic quality and use resources more efficiently.
WXYZ-TV says the overhaul of the suburban Detroit district is spelled out in a plan called Imagine 2020, which the board approved in a 4-to-3 vote.

The biggest change for the district will come in 2016-17, when Southfield High School and Southfield-Lathrup High School will be consolidated as one school at the Southfield High location, which is the larger campus. Southfield-Lathrup will be reorganized to accommodate three of Southfield's choice programs: grades 2-8 of MacArthur University Academy K-8; University Preparatory Academy, grade 8; and University High School Academy.
The district will also close Brace-Lederle K-8 school and Adler Elementary School after the 2016-17 school year.
The facility changes come as the district has been dealing with declining enrollment, rising expenses and lower revenue.
