The University of Michigan says it will expand its campus in Flint by purchasing the First Merit North building in the city's downtown.

WNEM-TV reports that university will pay $6 million for the 160,000-square-foot building, which will be used for both academic and administrative purposes. Constructing a comparable facility would cost an estimated $60 million, says U of M Flint Chancellor Sue Borrego.

“Space has been bottle necked on campus for several years so it's a great opportunity for us,” Borrego says.

The building' location across the street from U of M's existing Flint campus was a key selling point.

“I thought it was a fantastic idea because so many times when campus and be contagious and close, it’s such a huge bonus,” says Michael Behm, who serves on the university's Board of Regents.
