Many Arizona schools remain closed as teachers continue walkout over funding

Teachers protesting at state capitol want lawmakers to increase spending on education.

Striking teachers in Arizona took part in rallies at the state capitol for the second consecutive day Friday as they continued to press their case for raises and more resources for schools.

The Arizona Republic reports that the teachers plan to remain off the job on Monday, according to Arizona Education Association President Joe Thomas.

On Thursday, more than 50,000 rallied at the capitol in Phoenix in support of the #RedForEd movement and the fight for more education funding.

The Legislature adjourned Thursday, and will not reconvene until Monday. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has proposed a 20 percent pay hike for teachers over two years, but the legislature has not introduced a formal budget proposal.

Thomas says that if Ducey and the Legislature don’t act on their education funding demands by Monday, the AEA and the Arizona Educators United group may launch a signature-gathering effort to put a tax referendum on the November ballot.

“If they don’t listen, if they continue to ignore us, if they are that tone-deaf, then I think we have to take a ballot initiative out and we got to do this ourselves," Thomas says.
