The Duval County (Fla.) School Board has approved a contract for its next superintendent.

WJXT-TV reports that Diana Greene, now superintendent of the Manatee County (Fla.) district is set to begin her new job on July 1. She will be the school district's first permanent black female superintendent.

Greene will replace Nikolai Vitti, who left Duval County last year to take the helm of a reconfigured Detroit public school system.

Greene's contract will run from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2022. She will receive a base annual salary of $275,000, the same amount Vitti was paid. Greene, who has served as Manatee County superintendent for three years, received a salary there of $212,00 a year.

The Duval County district, based in Jacksonville, has about 130,00 students. The Manatee County system has about 49,000 students.

The Duval County board also has extended the contract of interim superintendent Patricia Willis through Aug. 3 to help the new administration transition.

Greene talked about what top priorities will be in Jacksonville.

"In August, I'm going to spend as much time as I can visiting, especially the schools that may be struggling, and then our high schools," Greene says. "We have 19 high schools that I can visit within the month of August. So my goal is to make sure I go to every single high school and review their safety plan, look at their campus, the facility, and make some decisions about are we doing everything we need to do to ensure that our students are safe, especially at our high schools."
