The district has been using the facility since August for a cyber school program.
About 500 students attending Jackson Academic STEAM Academy are enrolled in the virtual learning option and activities such as testing have been held at the university building, reports The Jackson Sun.
The district plans to reopen the former Malesus Elementary as a hub for the cyber school, but that project is a long way from completion, officials say.
The renovated Malesus will house the cyber school hub, a teacher learning center and pre-K classrooms.
Funding for the building purchase comes from the district's Elementary and Secondary Elementary Relief funds.
