Boston school district chooses next superintendent
The Boston district has chosen the top administrator in the Somerville (Mass.) school system as its next superintendent.
In a 4-3 vote, the Boston School Committee selected Somerville Superintendent Mary Skipper over Tommy Welch, a regional superintendent in Boston, reports The Boston Herald.
Skipper will replace Brenda Cassellius, who is stepping down after three years in the position. Drew Echelson, deputy superintendent of academics, will serve as acting superintendent in Boston until Skipper joins the district.
Skipper, 55, formerly taught at Boston Latin Academy. She has been a central office administrator in the Boston district and was the founding headmaster of TechBoston Academy, a technology-focused high school in the Boston district.
Skipper has a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, and master’s degrees from Harvard University and Columbia Teachers College.
