Catholic high school in Texas closes after 95 years
St. Gerard Catholic High School in San Antonio is closing after 95 years.
The school had only about 35 students enrolled for the coming school year, reports KSAT-TV. The high school blames Covid for its low budgets and enrollments.
The low enrollment would put the projected deficit for operations at more than $500,000, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
The archdiocese has been subsidizing the school for the past several years and with only three dozen students enrolled for the upcoming academic year, the archdiocese said the expense is unsustainable.
The Department of Catholic Schools and the Archdiocese of San Antonio is helping enrolled students transfer to other Catholic high schools in San Antonio.
St. Gerard Catholic High School was established in 1927.
