Robb Elementary School principal placed on administrative leave in Uvalde, Texas

July 26, 2022
A legislative committee has blamed principal Mandy Gutierrez and an assistant for knowing about a malfunctioning classroom lock and not having it repaired.

Mandy Gutierrez, principal of the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school where 19 students and two teachers were killed in a shooting attack, has been placed on administrative leave.

The Associated Press reports that Uvalde superintendent Hal Harrell, has removed Gutierrez from her leadership position at Robb Elementary School. The district did not provide any information on the reason for the move or any other comment.

A legislative committee has said that Gutierrez and an assistant knew that a lock to the classroom where the May 24 attack occurred wasn't working and did not take steps to have it repaired.

The Uvalde district also has decided to delay the start of the school year by three weeks until Sept. 6.
