The Columbus (Ohio) school board has voted to appoint the district's interim superintendent to the job on a permanent basis.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that Angela Chapman will lead the 45,000-student school system, the state's largest.
Chapman will succeed Talisa Dixon, who announced her retirement in December.
Chapman said she was "grateful and humbled for the opportunity to serve our district as the next permanent superintendent."
Dixon brought Chapman into the district administration in 2019, and until recently she served as chief transformation and leadership officer. In that role, Chapman oversaw many of the district's administrators and academic leaders, such as principals and regional area superintendents. That office also oversees school improvement and school leader recruitment, selection and development.
Her career includes stints as a teacher and administrator in Ohio, Tennessee and Washington, D.C.
The other finalists for the job were Brian McDonald, superintendent of the Pasadena (Calif.) Unified School District superintendent and Minneapolis Public Schools Eric Thomas, associate superintendent in the Minneapolis district.
