The Baltimore County (Md.) school board has chosen Deputy Superintendent Myriam Yarbrough as its next superintendent.

WYPR Radio reports that Yarbrough, who started her teaching career in the district in 1996, will replace Darryl Williams, who did not seek a new contract. She is scheduled to assume the job on July 1.

“I was here as a first-year teacher and I remember when Baltimore County Public Schools, we were at the top of the state," Yarbrough said after her selection. "It is my intention to work together with you, the community, our staff, all stakeholders and our students first and foremost to get back to the top of the state and the nation.”

Yarbrough will be the 111,000-student school system's fourth leader in six years. During her career, she has served as a principal of high and middle schools in the Montgomery Cunty (Md.) district. She returned to the Baltimore County district in 2020.

School Board Chair Jane Lichter said Yarbrough was selected over three other finalists “because she has a clear vision and embodies much of what we heard the community highlights as the desired characteristics and skills of the incoming superintendent.”

Yarbrough received bachelor of science and master of arts degrees from Bowie State University and received a doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park.
