The Escondido (Calif.) Union High School district has added six electric buses to its fleet.

The buses will be used to transport students to and from school, as well as for school field trips, and other student transportation needs. The new buses represent 30% of the district's fleet and are its first electric buses, reports Fox 5 News

The district is also planning on constructing a new charging station. In the meantime, the buses will be using temporary chargers. The buses can travel up to 160 miles on one charge.

Two of the buses were funded by the California Energy Commission’s School Bus Replacement Program, intended to helping schools throughout the state transition from diesel school buses to zero- or low-emissions vehicles.

The remaining four buses were funded through a San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District grant.
