Several Virginia districts receive federal funds to replace diesel buses with less-polluting vehicles

Districts will replace diesel buses with vehicles powered by propane or electricity.

Several districts in Virginia will share $1.5 million in federal funding to replace diesel buses with less-polluting vehicles.

$1.5 million in federal funding will pay for the replacing diesel buses with electric or propane-powered school buses. The program seeks to reduce harmful emissions from school buses.

The funds were administered through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of the 2021 American Rescue Plan Electric School Bus Rebates and the annual 2021 Diesel Emissions Reduction Act School Bus Rebates programs, reports WAVY-TV.

The funds will be disbursed to five districts:

  • $900,000 for three school buses for Petersburg City Public Schools 
  • $250,000 for 10 buses for Newport News Public Schools 
  • $200,000 for 10 buses for Loudoun County Public Schools 
  • $100,000 for five buses for Carroll County Public Schools 
  • $80,000 for four buses for Culpeper County Public Schools
