Construction Zone: Sustainable living
The Fauver Field Residence Halls project at Wesleyan University has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The freshman residence hall has 166 beds in 80 double rooms; five single rooms and a director's apartment. The upperclassman residence hall has 108 beds in 20 five-person suites; two, two-person suites; and two, two-person residential-advisor suites.
The design/build team worked to create concepts that support the increasing number of students moving on campus and continue the strategic facilities master plan, as well as maintain the trend of environmental sustainability in design and construction.
Among the green building concepts: bicycle storage to encourage alternative transportation; energy efficiency; resourceful waste management, and the use of recycled materials in construction; and incorporation of daylight into the facility to reduce energy requirements.
The halls will help carry out the university's residential life philosophy — providing progressively independent living by offering different housing styles — as well as move toward an environmentally sustainable campus.
The architect is Herbert S. Newman & Partners (New Haven, Conn). The design/builder is Konover Construction (Farmington, Conn.)
