Wake Forest University plans freshman residence hall
Wake Forest University plans to build a residence hall that will open in 2017 for first-year students on its Winston-Salem, N.C., campus.
The school says the four-story, 220-bed building will total 75,000 square feet. It will be a double-loaded corridor-style structure with a mix of single and double rooms.
The new hall, which has not yet been named, will be built on what is now a parking lot on the south side of campus next to Collins Residence Hall. The design of the new residence hall is based on South Hall, which opened in 2010 and subsequently received LEED Gold certification for its environmentally friendly design and construction.
The new residential space also will be designed to achieve LEED certification. will be energy efficient, have the latest in green technology, and be designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards. Sustainable design elements will include touch screens in the hallways for monitoring energy usage, high-efficiency double-paned aluminum windows, energy-efficient kitchen and laundry appliances, and thermostats that can be adjusted in individual rooms.
Like Wake Forest's other first-year residence halls, the facility will have a classroom for academic collaboration that takes place as part of the college’s Faculty Fellows Program.
The architect is Hanbury, Evans, Wright, and Vlattas Architects.
