Plans approved for new student housing at Worcester Polytechnic Institute

June 4, 2020
Six smaller student residences will be razed to make room for the new construction.

The Worcester, Mass., planning board has approved site plans for a 384-bed residence hall at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports that the four-story 108,000-square-foot building will replace most of the student housing on the seven-acre Salisbury Estates.

Salisbury Estates has been used for student housing by WPI since buying it in 1993. It consists of eight two-story residence halls.

Of those eight buildings, six will be demolished. The two remaining buildings will be renovated and have 90 beds in 30 units. They will be incorporated into the new building.

The new building will have common spaces for students, a market selling prepared foods and a café for students. It will also feature a courtyard.

In total, the redeveloped Salisbury Estates will have capacity for 474 students in about 286 units. That will be a net increase of about 150 beds and 179 units of student housing.
