The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education has authorized North Dakota State University to carry out a $26 million renovation of a residence hall on the Fargo campus.

Valley News Live reports Seim Hall, originally called the West High Rise, was built in 1972 at a cost of $1.5 million and provided living space for 290 students.

University officials say updated facilities are critical for attracting and retaining students. According to the memo approved by the State Board of Higher Education, the upgrades will:

  • Modify bathrooms to meet current codes and improve accessibility
  • Replace doors, ceilings, lights, flooring, and all finishes
  • Replace one elevator and add stops on each floor
  • Add a laundry room
  • Add study and lounge spaces
  • Install HVAC system
  • Update plumbing, electrical, fire sprinkler, and fire alarm systems
  • Repurpose other spaces

The university says Seim will be closed for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years and will reopen in fall 2028.

The project will be funded from local auxiliary reserve funds, capital building tier matching funds, and appropriated operating funds.
