The Dallas Independent School District has won approval of a $1.6 billion bond proposal that will pay for nine new schools and other facility improvements.

WFAA-TV reports that the massive funding request garnered the support of about 60 percent of those voting.

The nine new campuses will include two high schools, two preK-8 schools, one grade 3-8 school, and four elementary schools. In addition, 19 additions at existing schools will create 326 new classrooms.

Other improvements called for in the bond program: roof, HVAC, plumbing and other infrastructure upgrades; technology upgrades; improved gyms, locker rooms, libraries, labs, cafeterias and athletic spaces; land acquisition; and new or repurposed schools for new programs such as career technology, early childhood and innovation schools.
