Sustainability projects at Southern Illinois University paid for with student fees

$150,000 from student-paid green fees will be spent to enhance campus sustainability.

A $10-a-semester green fee paid by by students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will help pay for solar trash compactors, rechargeable batteries and paperless medical records systems. The Southern Illinoisan reports the university's Sustainability Council has allocated $150,000 for six projects to enhance campus sustainability. The green fee was enacted by the Southern Illinois Board of Trustees in 2009 as the result of a student-led initiative.
