Restored 103-year-old facility at Bowling Green State University receives LEED Gold

April 18, 2018
University Hall reopened last year on the Bowling Green, Ohio, campus.

The renovation of University Hall at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, has received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The facility, built in 1915, houses the offices of several university programs and the admissions office, as well as classrooms that serve the entire campus. The renovated space opened in fall 2017.

Some of the sustainable design elements that helped Bowling Green received a LEED Gold rating:

•New windows throughout the building.

•Efficient LED light fixtures, reduced potable water plumbing fixtures, and a commitment to provide at least 35 percent of the building’s electricity from renewable sources.

•Low-emitting materials and enhanced commissioning efforts.

•Reducing the physical footprint of the building and restoring green space.

•More than 90 percent of the materials removed in the renovation were diverted from landfills.

•Structural materials removed from the existing building were reincorporated into the renovatedbuilding.

•Promotion of alternative transportation with dedicated parking for low-emitting vehicles and increased bicycle storage near the site.

To acknowledge the historical significance of the original building, the updated University Hall has a restored building exterior and a new entry on the west face of the building, near the campus quadrangle.
