University of Delaware, Dupont Hall Laboratory Expansion, Newark

NEWARK — The Dupont Hall Laboratory Expansion is now under construction at the University of Delaware. The 65,000-square-foot facility will fill the last site on the school's Mall and complete the original master plan as conceived more than 80 years ago.

The building's character grows outs of the campus' colonial version of the Collegiate Georgian style. Located at the center of the Mall, Dupont Hall will be flanked on the north by Wolf Hall, the oldest building in the Mall, and by Evans Hall on the south. The design's main feature is a six-columned entrance portico that faces the portico of Gore Hall. From the Mall, stone steps rise to Dupont Hall's main entrance. The exterior includes a slate roof with detailed dormers, double-hung windows, and a brick pattern modeled on Wolf Hall. Classical detailing continues into the entrance lobby, but the remaining interior is devoted to lab equipment and support services.

The three-story structure will connect to two adjacent buildings. It will contain the dean's offices for the College of Engineering; the Department of Civil Engineering; offices for the Department of Materials Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; classrooms, cleanrooms and labs.

Construction is expected to be complete in May 2002. Architect is Allan Greenberg, Architect, LLC.
