Technology building benefits students PITTSBURGH - Last fall, Carlow College completed the A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology, a student-centered learning facility designed to foster collaborative learning.
In addition to 12 classrooms, the 95,000-square-foot building holds 14 teaching laboratories, including specially designed labs for microbiology, anatomy and physiology, botany, zoology, ecology, cell biology, chemistry, genetics and physics. The facility features research labs, as well as a greenhouse, darkroom, bio-chamber and reference library.
Workspaces in classrooms and labs are organized in small groups instead of traditional, long rows. The environment will encourage learning through interaction and communication, while accenting team dynamics and interpersonal communication skills.
Open spaces on each floor were designed so students could study together, and windows and skylights throughout the building open up the classrooms to allow natural light into the rooms. More than 1,000 computer outlets were incorporated into the design.
