BELLAIRE — Construction is underway on Houston Independent School District's Pin Oak Middle School. The 174,500-square-foot facility will face a major freeway, so it has been designed to resemble a civic center more than a typical school building, with a sweeping wall of windows behind a canopied row of columns at the entrance.
The $25 million school will serve 1,200 students in grades 6 to 8. The complex will include three academic buildings, each containing 400 students in one grade level. The building will feature a library and media center, cafeteria, fine-arts facilities, 400-seat gymnasium and a large multipurpose athletic room with a performance platform.
Located on 18 acres, the school grounds will include parking for 160 cars, a bus loop with dropoff canopies, an auto loop with dropoff canopies, playing fields and tennis courts. The project is scheduled to be completed in January 2002.
Architect for the project is PBK Architects. Satterfield & Pontikes Construction is construction manager.
