Project File: Restoring character

Marshall-Adams Hall at Michigan State University, East Lansing, is undergoing a rehabilitation to restore the building's exterior to resemble its 1902 appearance, and to restore its character-defining interior features, while incorporating advanced technologies.

Marshall-Adams Hall is one of two buildings that house the university's department of economics.

When the project is completed in 2005, the building will have new electrical, HVAC, plumbing and fire-protection systems; a new elevator, ceiling, flooring and finishes; and repaired or replaced windows.

In addition to equipping the department with seminar rooms, offices and meeting spaces, the rehabilitation also will recreate the building's character, which has been lost because of previous remodeling, says Rowena Pecchenino, chair of the MSU department of economics.

The architect for this project is Lord, Aeck & Sargent (Ann Arbor, Mich./Atlanta).
