The University of Wisconsin — Whitewater knew that in order to remain competitive in the collegiate marketplace, capital improvements such as a renovation and expansion were necessary to its Williams Center and DLK/Kachel Fieldhouse athletic and recreational facility.

From the beginning the goal was to create a facility for multiple sports; it would be a significant resource for athletes and a training center for teams. The site also needed to serve as a meeting ground for both athletes and non-athletes.

The project was divided into three phases, with the first phase including the installation of an indoor track and three playing courts in the 57,590-square-foot addition to the fieldhouse. For the second phase, the architect designed a two-story addition housing a weightroom and cardio loft, four tournament-level racquetball courts, training rooms and classrooms, administrative offices, coaches offices and support functions. For the final phase, the architect renovated the existing facilities. A new public entry and lobby, as well as a more convenient student entry, was added. Special attention was given to lighting in all three phases.

Hammel, Green & Abrahamson, Inc. (Milwaukee) is the project architect.
