Staggering growth is the order of the day in Comal County, Texas

, where the population grew a whopping 50.5 percent in the 1990s. Smithson Valley High School, built in 1987 to house 1,200 students, is home to 1,900, and about 300 more are expected next year. A huge construction project is under way to add another 125,000 square feet of space. But that still won't be enough, and so the district is planning to build another high school.
