The Boston School Committee has approved a capital improvement plan that calls for building five new schools and renovating four others.
The facility upgrades are part of a city goal to replace or renovate any building that's more than 50 years old, reports WCVB-TV.
Superintendent Brenda Cassellius presented the proposal as part of the BuildBPS educational and facilities master plan, a 10-year, $1 billion outline for improving learning environments in the district.
The plan as presented by Cassellius calls for these facility improvements:
- Five new school buildings: Construction of school buildings in each of the neighborhoods of Allston/Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, and Roxbury, as well as a new school for the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing;
- Four major school renovations: Following the approved closure of the Edwards Middle School at the end of the 2020-21 school year, the merger of the BCLA-McCormack 7-12, and the proposed closures of the Irving and Timilty schools at the end of the 2021-22 school year, all three middle school buildings will be renovated.
- A timeline and plan for continued maintenance and upgrades of all school buildings
The Boston district serves more than 52,000 students in 123 schools.
