The Broward County (Fla.) school board has appointed a new leader for its troubled bond program.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Frank Girardi, the district's director of construction, has been named as executive director of the district’s bond program.
He’ll oversee design, construction and cost control for the $800 million bond program, which was approved by voters in 2014.
The appointment comes as school board members have voiced growing frustrations about the slow pace of construction. Many projects are years behind schedule.
The job is considered temporary because the position isn’t on the district organization chart. Superintendent Robert Runcie says he will ask the School Board to make the job permanent in the coming months.
Girardi’s new duties had been handled by Leo Bobadilla, the district’s chief of facilities. He’ll keep his $196,000-a-year job but will focus more on maintenance and life-safety issues, officials said. Girardi will report to Bobadilla.
Girardi's salary will increase from $127,000 to $139,000.
It’s unclear how Bobadilla will fit into the new structure. His contract with the school district expires June 30.
