Northside (Texas) district breaks ground on 11th high school

Campus is scheduled to open in 2017 to serve the growing Kallison Ranch section of the San Antonio-based district.

The steadily growing Northside Independent School District in San Antonio has begun construction of the system's 11th high school.

For now, the campus is being called the "Kallison Ranch area" high school, but eventually the district is expected to name the school for a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, as it has done for all of Northside's high schools. Officials anticipate that the school will open in 2017-18, and the additional classroom space will relieve crowding at Brennan, Taft, and O’Connor high schools.

“The seemingly never-ending march to build more schools continues in Northside,” says Superintendent Brian T. Woods. “The 1604/Culebra corridor continues to be a fast-growing area of the district and we are anxiously awaiting the opening of this modern, state-of-the-art learning facility in 2017.”

Student enrollment in the Northside district is 103,000 this year, compared with 56,000 in 1994-95. Planners project student numbers to rise to 107,000 by the time the new high school opens in 2017.

“Northside remains the ‘Destination District’ and we’ve opened 40 new schools in the last 13 years,” says school board member Karen Freeman.

Funds to construct the Kallison Ranch school come from a $648.3 million bond package that voters approved in 2014. The architect is Garza Bomberger & Associates, and the builder is Joeris General Contractors.
